I have long forgotten my childhood illusions of becoming a kind of war hero someday. As a child, I grew up watching the movies of local celebrities like Fernando Poe Jr. and the kinds of Lito Lapid fighting battles with invincibility. Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone too had a great impact in my childhood being a one man army able to defeat a platoon or a battalion in his Ramboo series. Most Filipino kids loved war movies.
Just recently, I chanced upon an APF exhibition in Ormoc, Leyte showing their hardware in war 7n a plaza. Everyone was ecstatic to get a glimpse and touched these military equipment we normally only saw in TVs and movies. So here I was, proudly setting on top of what tney called an Armed Personnel Carrier. It was fun and educational to say the least.
But deep inside me, while seeing those military hardware, I felt sorry for our soldiers. These equipment are at least 30 to 40 years old and considered obsolete. I saw these young soldiers proudly posing their M-16 armalite, .30 caliber machine guns and 105 mm guns without hesitation. I honestly wondered how those guns can endure a long day battle.
China have been spying on us for decades and decided we have a primitive armed forces. So they (china) decided that they can bully us (Philippines) all they want. In fact, the don't need to invade us. All they need to do is finance the CPP NPA to paralyze our peace and order.
I hope our AFP modernization will be taken seriously by the government in the next many decades. I want to see a strong Philippine Armed Forces one day and be very proud of it.
